Considered to be one of the 108 Sivalayas consecrated by Lord Parasurama, the fascinating legends linked to the Chowallur temple bear testimony to the historicity and age of this temple. Lord Shiva, the deity of Sree Vadakumnatha Temple, Thrissur, is said to have manifested himself on an umbrella carried by one of his beloved devotees, a pious old Namboodiri from Chowallur, who used to walk all the way to Thrissur to have a daily view of the Lord. When his devotee became too old to visit him regularly, the Lord is said to have accompanied him to his home in Chowallur. A temple was constructed at the very place where the Lord appeared to his devotee.
People living in the vicinity of the temple believe that they have a divine protection from snake-poison because of the presence of Lord Siva. In the two-tiered, large, circular Sanctum Sanctorum, the idol of Lord Shiva is seen facing west, while that of his consort Sri Parvathy, faces east, showering blessings in all directions. The 'Sapthamathrukkal', a precious black stone idol symbolizing the seven divine mothers is also worshipped in the temple in the form of idols made of Krishnasila, yet another rare phenomenon.
At Chowallur Mahadeva temple, the power and grace of the consecrated deity of Lord Shiva and Parvathy form the focus of the special pujas and offerings here. Innumerable followers bear testimony to the efficacy and power of the pujas and offerings specified here. Lord Siva, facing the west is revered as 'Kshipraprasadi'(one who is quick and prompt in his response to the prayers of his devotees). Pujas at the Chowallur Temple are performed twice during the day.
The other sub-deities of the temple are Ganapathy, Ayyappan and Simhodaran. Shiva ratri is considered auspicious like any other Shiva temple. Dambathi pooja at Chowallur is considered as an offering that could invoke divine favour to the married couple. Jaladhara(ablution with water) is another important rite performed to Shiva Linga. The tantric rights are vested with Keezhmundayoor Mana.
In order to complete the worship, devotee should also pray at the nearby famous Krishna temple, known as Thiruvambadi Krishna temple. This temple was there even before the construction of Chowallur Shiva temple.
