Trichattukulam - Vaduthalayesan Sahayam!

Chittukulam aka Thrichattukulam Shiva temple is in Panavally panchayat, Alappuzha and is situated near the NSS Higher Secondary School at Trichattukulam junction in Cherthala-Arukkutty Road. The place is 21 kilometres away from Cherthala and 4.5 kilometres away from Arukkutty. Once this temple was under the governance of Namboothiris. Then a warrier family managed the temple for a long time. Later it came under the rulership of Venad kingdom. It is also said that Venad kingdom seized power after killing the warrier. Now this is a major Shiva temple under Travancore Devaswom Board with five poojas and three sheevelis daily. Thrichattukulathappan is locally known as 'Vaduthalayesan'.

The temple faces east. The eastern gopuram is small and simple. There is a big Anakkottil in front of the copper flag-mast. The 'Balikkalppura' and 'Namaskaramandapa' are decorated with wooden sculptures. Inside the main sanctum Shiva faces east. Usually, the Shiva linga will be covered with a Thirumugham(Holy face) and hence devotees could feel the presence of Lord while standing in front of the Srikovil. There are shrines for Ganapathy and Bhagavathi inside the Nalambalam. The Bhagavathi idol was installed in 1978. Both the deities faces east. The two-storeyed Srikovil of Shiva is rectangular in shape with a copper-covered roof. There is a Nagayakshi idol at the north-east corner of valiyambalam.

The temple pond is situated to the north side of eastern gopuram. Ksheera Dhara(ablution with milk), Pinvilakku(Back lamp) and Rudrabhishekam are the other important offerings. 'Ksheera dhara' is specially done for curing mental illnesses and 'Pinvilakku' is for getting good married life. The annual festival falls in the month of Makaram(January-February). Shivarathri, Thiruvathira, Mondays and Pradosha days are considered auspicious in this temple.
