Kidangoor Subrahmanya Swami Temple is one of the ancient temples of kerala which stands on the bank of Meenachil river by the Kidangoor–Manarcad road 1 Km south of the Ettumanoor–Poonjar highway in Kottayam district.
It is believed that the idol of Lord Subrahmanya came out of the Kamandulu (typical pot use by sages for carrying holy water) carried by Sage Gauna when it got tilted. Along wih the flow of the water, the idol was also carried away to a newly built temple where consecration of Lord Vishnu was intended by the temple officials. But as they felt the presence of Lord Subrahmanya, they consecrated the idol of sage Gauna also in the newly built temple along with the Vishnu idol.
Kidangur is historically one of the 64 villages of the Namboodiri Brahmins. It was the boundary of the Thekkumkur-Vadakkumkur Kings. The 14 Brahmin families of Kidangoor were the owners of this temple.
Sage Bharata's concept of Naatya Shastra (the book of classical dance) is evident in the sculptural work inside the Koothambalam. So this is different from other Koothambalams as it is believed to be built by the legendary Uliyannoor Peumthachan. The scenes from indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharatha are beautiful sculptured on the Ragamandapam. There is a huge pillar carved out of Kurumthotti (Kurumthotti is a medicinal plant which is rarely used for furnitures or buildings). Inside the hall there is a Bhuvaneswari idol. Women are not allowed to enter into the Koothambalam.
A special performance of Brahmachari Koothu is conducted only in this temple and is for the benefit of devotees who have no children. Goddess enshrined in the Koothambalam facing south is for the removal of all the problems of devotees. During the annual festival, Chakiyar Koothu is conducted regularly.
The most important festival commences on the day of Karthika in the month of Kumbham and lasts for ten days. The thrikkarthika in Virchika and thaipooyam in Makaram are the other major festivities. Every month on Velutha Shashti day (Shashti which comes when the moon is on the ascendant) thousands of devotees, especially women, flows to the temple to have a glimpse of the deity and for subsequent observance of vows and rituals.
